The cadmium used in Prius batteries comes from the infamous mines near Sudbury, Ontario. The surrounded countryside is so polluted that NASA uses it to test their Mars rovers. The process of refining the cadmium ore is so toxic that it’s illegal to do it anywhere in North America, so the ore is shipped across Canada to the West Coast in smoke-belching trains, loaded onto bulk carriers, shipped to China, refined in a process that poisons thousands of square miles, then shipped back to North America to be made into Prius batteries, then shipped back across the Pacific yet AGAIN to be installed in the cars in Japan.
